Scaling and Polishing

Brushing Two to Three times a day will still leave something behind. Plague that isnt removed within couple of days will start to harden and it will mineralises into tartar. It will bond to the tooth surface including the gumline where a toothbrush would not reach.

This is where scalling comes in and removes the tartar. At our clinic, we tend to clear the hardened deposits then polish the enamel to smoothen so the plague has less to cling on to. At this point of time, it is the most routine treatment in dentistry.

Most patients think of the treatment as a cosmetic clean. It does leave your teeth to look brighter but it is a side effect rathern than the point.

What Is Scaling & Polishing?

Scaling

Scaling removed and breaks up the hardended deposits, above and below the gumline. Depends on cases, some cases has gum disease, we may go further with the root canal treatment to smoothen the root surfaces so the gum tissue can reattach properly.

Polishing

Polishing will then come after. A fine paste and a soft rubber cup will buff the enamel until its smooth. It won’t chemically whiten the teeth but it lifts the surface stains that leaves a finish that plague struggles to stick to. Most of the patients we have notice the smoothness with their tongue before they see themselves in the mirror.

When You Probably Need A Cleaning?

You may need professional scaling and polishing if you notice any of the following signs.

Breath that does not improve

If burshing, flossing and mouthwash aren't fixing it, the source usually comes from bacteria in places you cannot reach.

Stains that wont shift

Surface staining builds up faster than most people expect in Malaysia's coffee-and-tea culture, and polishing (sometimes paired with EMS Airflow) handles this specifically.

Bleeding or Swollen Gums

This is the one patients often dismiss as normal issue. Bleeding is inflammation and this is how gum disease begins.

Wearing Braces or Retainers

Bracketts and wires trap food and plague in spots a toothbrush can't remove, which is why patients end up with white decalcification marks once braces comes off.

Its the most thorough options for patients who hasn’t cleaned their teeth for awhile.

EMS Airflow Cleaning

This is a newer system that works differently than normal scalling. It is a controlled stream of warm water, air , and ultra-fine erythiritol powder that lifts the soft plague and stains off the tooth surface without touching it.

No scraping, No Vibration. This matters more than it sounds if you ever found scalling uncomfortable.

EMS Airflow may be recommended if you:

  • Have coffee, tea, or smoking stains
  • Wear braces or retainers
  • Have sensitive teeth
  • Want a gentler cleaning experience
  • Need routine maintenance cleaning
  • Have dental restorations such as crowns or veneers

It’s safe for children and for patients with existing dental work and usually it is quicker than standard scaling.

Which Teeth Cleaning Option Is Right for You?

The best option depends on your oral condition. Some patients only need normal scaling and polishing, while others may benefit from EMS Airflow for stain and biofilm removal.

During your visit, our dentist will assess your teeth and recommend the most suitable treatment for you.

What Happens During Your Appointment

First, we take a look.

Before any cleaning, we will check for infection, decay and also the conditions of your gums. This determines which cleaning method you need and normally we will find something that needs to sort out before cleaning

Then the cleaning.

Depending on what the examination has showed, that's normal scaling, EMS Airflow or can be both. Most appointments will run 30 to 45 minutes from start to finish.

Then polishing.

A soft rubber cup with prophy paste, smoothens the enamel and removing the remaining surface stains. This is what most patients fin satisfying.

Finally, we go through maintenance

After going through both treatments, we will inform you what we have found and give advice based on the case.

Frequently Asked Questions About Scaling and Polishing

Will I feel anything during scaling, or is it just numbing/pressure?

Most patients feel vibration and water spray rather than pain. If there’s heavy tartar or inflamed gums, some areas may feel tender, tell us beforehand and we’ll adjust pressure or pace the session, rather than pushing through discomfort.

Most patients are advised to do scaling every 6 months.

However, you may need more frequent cleaning if you:

  • Wear braces
  • Smoke
  • Drink coffee or tea often
  • Have bleeding gums
  • Have heavy tartar buildup
  • Have gum problems
  • Find it difficult to clean certain areas properly

Your dentist will recommend the right cleaning schedule based on your oral condition.

Scaling removes tartar and surface stains sitting on top of your enamel. It won’t change your natural tooth shade. If your goal is whiter teeth rather than cleaner teeth, whitening is the separate treatment for that , we can tell you which one you actually need during the exam.

You can eat right after scaling and polishing. If fluoride was applied, wait about 30 minutes before eating or drinking.

Yes, it is safe and recommended even if you have braces. They help remove plaque from hard-to-reach areas around brackets and wires.

Scaling and polishing can remove some surface stains caused by coffee, tea, smoking, or plaque buildup. However, if you want to change the natural shade of your teeth, teeth whitening may be more suitable.

A normal scaling and polishing session usually takes around 30 to 60 minutes, depending on your oral condition and the amount of buildup.
